We spotted and avoided a 20 foot log floating and reported its GPS position to the Coast Guard. We will not move at night due to the danger of hitting a log. After starting out in bright sun and glassy calm seas the cloud cover and fog closed in; our fog horn got a workout. Along the way we spotted many whales and the dolphins made graceful and playful moves all around Bella Donna's hull. The whales are starting to head south for the winter.
After a cloudy kind of cold morning the clouds are departing and bright sunshine is bathing Bella Donna moving through a calm sea at 9 to 10 knots. The fishing lines are out, but we are going a little too fast to have a good chance to catch fish. We are navigating closer to shore, 20 to 30 miles, than we had planned due to a low pressure that is headed inland leaving high winds in the pressure gradient zone, farther out to sea, as it is replaced by the high pressure. We are trying to get to San Francisco before this wind gradient hits shore; this is forecasted to happen Monday and the relatively high winds will continue until Wednesday. We hope to be in San Francisco Sunday night.
News Flash, a bird, a little Sparrow just walked into the salon. I am not kidding; s/he walked in and flew to the chart table after drinking some water and picking on our lunch leftovers in the cockpit. S/he looks tired; we are about 20 miles from shore at this time. After sitting on the Chart table s/he flew over to Ed's lap and then jumped to the floor under the "Nevada" table. As if interested in our library and selecting a book, s/he jumped up on the bookshelf. Now it is hot in the salon as the sky is perfectly clear and it is just after 1 PM. The bird flies out to the cockpit for a breath of fresh air. Now back to the chart table. I think we have a new crew member. I think s/he has been reading tour guides for San Francisco and just found a way to get there without having to fly.
Even though we do not have internet or phone; we still have satellite. The only thing on satellite that is not prohibitively expensive is TV. However, the news on TV is not good. I will have more tomorrow.
God Bless Bella Donna and God Bless the USA.
